Precious Moments Collectibles: "An Overview"

The "Precious Moments" gift line has become a beloved staple of American collectible culture, and likewise the series itself has flourished in the form of gift-giving. From phonographs to figurines, Bibles to tin trays, the "Precious Moments" image adorns a variety of relics from the past, all with varying degrees of value and worth. "Precious Moments" collectibles, however, are only half of the story...

Sam Butcher, of Carthage MO, is the artist behind these adorable nostalgic and motivational figurines. After being trained in art in college, he and a friend started a small company in 1974 to produce a line of cards and posters based on Sam's drawings of children with his trademark teardrop-shaped eyes. They called their company Jonathan & David. When they attended a Christian Booksellers Association Convention in Anaheim, their merchandise was an immediate hit.

Within a few years Butcher was approached by Enesco with the idea of producing 3D versions of his drawings in porcelain. The first figurines were produced in 1978. The earliest figurines are marked Jonathan & David, but the name was soon changed to Precious Moments, which was felt to be more descriptive and easier to remember. The rest, as they say, is history, and what we're left with now is a vast breadth of "Precious Moments" collectibles that span every area of interest imaginable.

But how do you assess such an overwhelming range of antiques and collectibles?

The bottom line for the value of anything, "Precious Moments" collectibles included, is that any item is only worth the greatest amount another interested party is willing to give for it. When it comes to this beloved line of sentimental mushy-ness, uniqueness is key, with an emphasis on rarity being the deciding factor in overall value.

For almost as long as "Precious Moments" has existed, so existed have collectors of this wonderful gift line. That being said, this market for collectibles is equally rich with history, as manufacturers will always strive to meet the demands of their consumers. It goes without saying that the older a "Precious Moments" collectible is, the better... but sometimes exclusiveness can be just as profitable. Always keep an eye out for strange and unusual manifestations of the "Precious Moments" collectibles, and as a good rule of thumb if the item seems to defy your own expectations of product normalcy, chances can be pretty good that others will share your curious interest too, which translates as value in the market place.
